@takeonusmle99: this pt has has his arms abducted to 90°, what is the muscle responsible for the abduction of the arm from 15 ° to 90 ° ? and from 0 ° to 15 ° ?

0 to 15 is supraspinatus and 15 to 90-100 is Deltoid then anywhere up from 100-180 is Serratus Anterior

Yes.
So if the pt's arm is abducted to 90° it should be testing Deltoid or supraspinatus? and why?

in the question it says the patient has pain it didnt say he couldnt lift his arm. Secondly there wasnt a nerve lesion that he could not abduct his arm. Thirdly maybe he could build up the strength and start to lift the arm to 15 and then deltoid took over but then when he had to perform the empty can test and resistance was applied the pain that resulted proved that the problem is in the Supraspinatous and that test is 90% specific for that tendon.

Right.
The empty can position is 90° of horizontal abduction and 30° forward flexion with the thumbs turned downward, this position eliminates most of the deltoid action and the patient has to actively resists a downward force applied by the examiner using the supraspinatus muscle.

Thanks for the youtube link.

Nice discussion. I always wondered why there was pain after abduction to 90.
Thanks miracoli and takeonusmle99Smile
