A 42yrs old woman is diagnosed with radial nerve palsy. When muscle function is examined at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints, what findings are most likely to be present?
A. Inability to abduct the digits at the MCP joint
B. Inability to adduct the digits at the MCP joint
C. Inability to extend the MCP joints
D. Inability to extend the MCP, PIP, and DIP joints
E. Inability to extend the PIP and DIP joints
F. Inability to flex the digits at the MCP joint

please explain which muscles perform each functions from A to F and their innervation.

ulnar nerve C8-T1 supplies the dorsal and palmar interossei which abduct and adduct respectively , along with the lumbricals of 4th and 5th digit which flex at MCP and Extend at PIP and DIP.

while the 2nd and third lumbricals are supplied by median nerve. (C5-T1)

radial nerve damage results in loss of extensor function of extensor digitorum inserted at the middle and distal phalanx so we get wrist drop.

if hand is supported then the phalanges can be extended by interossei which are inserted at extensor expansions

"D"

thank you .
plz post the right ans

@kemimdim:
"C" is correct because:
Extension of MCP joints is by radial nerve
Extension of PIP and DIP joints is by median and ulnar nerves

Miracoli: Thanks for all Qs.
