guys, do we give

labetalol, hydralazine or alpha methyl dopa. According to UW they say labetolo is the best but kaplan says alpha methyl dopa.... me confusedSad
HYDRELLAZINE FOR HTN EMERGENCIES,LABETO,IN THINK B BLOCKERS ARE ALSO TOCOLYTICS DEPENDING ON THE PRESENTATION SELECT LABETOLOL,ALSO USED IN CRISES.SO BEST IS METHYL DOPA IF NO OTHER COMPLICATIONS
ok did some "digging" and I came up with JNC VII (joint cometee report #7):
methyldopa - prefered on long term follow up studies dupporting safety
BBs - generaly safe, atenolo report of IUGR
labetalo - increasingly prefered to methyldopa due to reduced side effects
clonidine - limited data
CCB - limited data, no increase teratogenicity eith exposure
diuretics - no first line, probably safe
ACEIs - contraindicated

in preeclamsia
hydralazine - first line (and some doses if you are interested)
labetalol - second line (doses....)
nifedipine - controversial , doses etc. ... caution with MgSO4, short acting not aproved by FDA for use in HBP
nitroprusiat - rarely, when others fail, doses etc.... fetal cyanide if more then 4hrs

here is the link for what ever you want in HBP therapy guideline
