As a missionary pediatrician on an isolated region of New Guinea, you encounter a series of children with severe motor deficits. The children display tremors during intentional movements, but not when resting. The children can initiate motor responses and have normal knee jerk reflexes. Upon further questioning of the mothers, you discover that all the mothers took a potion made from local Iguana scales. The drug was billed as an aphrodisiac and as a cure for morning sickness. The potion was taken by all young fertile females in the tribe prior to and during the first few months of pregnancy. The potion is clearly affecting the normal development of the nervous system. Which embryonic division of the nervous system would you suspect has been affected?
