I have good scores, US LOR but I am geographically limited to 5-6 programs for categorical IM as I do not want to be away from my spouse/child for 3 years. But, for back up in case I do not match in these programs, I do not mind applying widely for Transitional or Prelim med since it is 1 year only and I can use it as additional USCE and probably increase my chances for applying for 2007 match in my region if needed. I know that TY is more competitive than prelim medicine.

My question is
Can I apply for categorical IM after doing prelim medicine. I know I can apply for sudden openings for PGY2 spots in IM (but they are extremely rare, especially if you are geographically limited) but can I apply to regular IM positions as well? I have heard of imgs doing prelim surgery, gain some experience and familiarity and then get into categorical surgery- can the same be done for medicine. I also personally know of a couple of imgs that did categorical IM after transitional year but I am not sure about prelim medicine.
