CSF Concept. Correct me if i am wrong.

1.CSF Pressure . Normal ..Newborn =80 “ 100, Child n adult = < 200
If > 200 ..1. Pseudotumour if u see high ICP & papilloedema

2. very high in Cryptococcal in HIV
3. high in all meningitis , but Normal in viral

2. Colour ..Normal.. straw
Turbid . Pyogenic
ClearViral
Xanthochromia . 90% SAH after 12 hrs

3.Cell count . Normal < 5/mm3, 100% lymphocyte, O% Neutrophil

Neutrophil >1000 .. Pyogenic n partially treated
100 “ 700 . TB n viral
Lymphocyte ++ - it can be TB, viral, Ricketssia, fungal
TBM is similar to viral except high protein in TBM,
Normal suger in viral ( as virus cannt use suger)

If you see RBC.. suspect Herpes.

If there is many RBC without xanthochromia suspect Trauma
Dxtic of trauma is RBC > 6000/mm

In meningitis, normal ratio of WBC & RBC is .. 1 wbc = 750 to 1000 RBC

Example,if u see RBC 750,000 in CSF, there should be WBC 750. Now if you have only 100 WBC, that means it can™t be Meningitis.. cause is Traumatic.

That™s my summary of CSF concept.
I hope it helps.

paeds kaplan is easy to review.
awesome man!...but lil confusing..for me....
individual wud be better
like
bact meningitis----cell count..inc mostly neutrophils..na?
glucose--40
viral----------------------------------mostly lymphocytes
normal
increased
thats all i know..iam weak at these...mostly get confusedby values in exam...eventhat fev/fvc sucks me in!
oh god ..i typed something ...it cam e out as something!
Xanthrochromia is also seem in Herpes meningitis, correct?
