I am working in a hospital as a Pharmacy Tech, there I came across an Indian Doc who offer me to join a medical round with him, its usually happens once a week for an hour.
Do you guys think , it will benifit me in any way.
Thanks a lot for your suggestion
yes absolutely. at the end if he is willing to give you a letter, that is going to be very helpful. It depends when you are planning to apply. If this year, then it is too late.
For now, I would say, if you don't have any problem, then join him and when you develop a good relation with him, ask him for a letter when you apply. Don't ask him right away. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much distraught
Actually I will be applying next year, I am also studying for my steps, in order to meet both ends I have to work full time. Luckily I met doc during prayer service @ hospital , He is a senior Endrocrinologist. I can also attend case discussion apart from medical round.
Once again thank you for your prompt reply/advice. GL for your match.
One more thing, if I attend Med round, I have to take leave without pay for an hour(4 hrs/month) from my dept. Albeit I got low end salary (Min Wage), but any sacrifice for the better future of my kids will be a worthwhile, i guess?
I really appreciated the way people help each other in this forum.
One Team, One Fight.
pass_mle, this is a VERY good opportunity. This is why people go volunteering- to get to know somebody. In your case you met this person through your work.
In addition to LOR, you will have someting to put in your CV. As you said you are not done with USMLEs, which means by the time you apply you will have a gap between year of graduation and begining of application season. Gap is a bad sign CV, I have mine (3 years and 8 mos that spent for all Steps) and speak from my experience. Some PDs dont care that you studied USMLEs, had baby, worked as a pharm. techichian or RN or else.
By going to this morn.rounds you can get 1st-LOR, 2nd-fill your CV with this info, 3d-refresh your knoweledge. Way to go!!! so, take this sacrifice with these 4 hrs-ir worse it! GL!
Nastia,
Thanks soo much for your answer and advice, I really appreciated that you took time to reply. I will Inshallah go for it. I had been doing Clinical Research for 4 yrs and did a Fellow ship from Japan, lost my Research job due to recession, finally got a job as a Rx technician. I also got a LOR from my PI in a research job.
Thanks again for your good words. GL for your match , even your story is inspiring for me.
@pass_mle. Don't worry. inshaAllah everything will work out. Have faith in Him. He never lets his true slaves down. Do your best and leave the rest to Him. a little sacrifice at some point can lead to a bigger gain later. Don't we fast in ramadan just because of that?
Its a wonderful opportunity. However for it to be effective u have to work harder than u do as a technician.
The window of opportunity is narrow, however u have to grab it. If u think u are just gonna show up at rounds and see what they are doing, then dont even show up as it aint beneficial.
However u really need to read on the cases, try and chip in the discussion(if they are ok with that), ask intelligent questions and even volunteer to present cases, and use your research experience to do write ups that they dont have time for.
The endocrinologist will likely give u a letter of recommend...however u have to work very hard for the other drs to notice u
Good luck
You are very welcome, pass_mle!
I also agree with nrmp2012, that during the rounds you need pay attention to cases and doc's comments, read updated literature, ask Qs, come up with new info about certain disease that you read in magazine-another word, show your interest and knoweledge.
