Hi guys! Did someone send or going to send an email to programs before match? For instance, email in which you mention that you gonna rank your program #1 or high. When is better to send this letter?
its up t u to send or not. but it wont hurt. i am going to send some of them ...not real all of them.
abt timing? nt sure, is feb25th last date of rank for apps? if yes, send them ur email around the same time or before it. wait t c wht others say, good to knw.

lastly and the most important point: u cant tell them number 1 or else...its illegal and wd piss them off! they can easily remove ur name! it is written alll over nrmp not to talk abt numbers. just talk abt top choices or something like they are ur fav proram. dats all. gl
rajji, that's not true at all. Telling a program you're ranking them number one is not a match violation. A program asking you where you're going to rank them is. Please don't spout out uninformed advice like this.

Monami: I would send it now if you're going to send it. Places that have wrapped up interviews may have already started compiling rank lists as such.
mss: where is ur reference? u urself r gushing out as if u r god with ur self-reference!!

i am not god, i spoke with a faculty who told me it wd be illegal to talk abt number 1 or else and dont look good. such things(numbering) is like a gray zone i think and debating. u go ahead and tell them all u r ranking them number 1!
yeah you can tell programs that you are going to rank them number #1. But I wont lie to them about it. Some programs might have already finished their ranking, others might not have started. There is no real way to know to be honest.
http://www.nrmp.org/code-of-conduct/

You were the one that referenced it's "written all over the nrmp" - that's the website link for code of communication. In it, you will see a few things, including what I mentioned about "ranking preferences" and other such things. Nothing about your communication with programs.

It's not a grey zone, stop making stuff up.
applicants are allowed to say whatever they want to the program about ranking.

however what the faculty might be talking about is lying to the program and telling them that you are ranking them as number 1 while in fact you are not going to do that.

Why? It just looks bad on your part. After match is over, Programs are able to see where the applicant that they ranked ended up matching...
mss: u still dont understand. u havent provided reference for wht u r advising here to rank 1 or not. it clearly says :
#2: discourages ....especially if u r making up stuffs to tell all programs u r ranking them 1st, while u dont for sure.

#1: understand there are pds who rank those who ask or go for 2nd look or else.even if it is written "declining..." there is no clear policy. do whtever u want! i didnt answer ur qs, keep ur respect!

1#Declining to require second visits or visiting rotations Program directors shall respect the logistical and financial burden many applicants face in pursuing multiple interactions with programs and shall not require them or imply that second visits are used in determining applicant placement on a rank order list.

2#Discouraging unnecessary post-interview communication Program directors shall not solicit or require post-interview communication from applicants, nor shall program directors engage in post-interview communication that is disingenuous for the purpose of influencing applicants’ ranking preferences.
This was a tweet from @nrmp during their chat session...

"Yes, you may volunteer your interest in the program. You cannot require or ask the program to reveal their interest in you."

Doesnt say you can tell programs that you would rank them number 1, but does it imply that? I dont know. You can call and ask nrmp about it.
@rajji I do not think it is an NRMP violation to tell programs where you are ranking them as is seen in the link msspyte provided. I do agree with you that it is not in good taste to tell every program that you are ranking them #1. For one thing, they will eventually be informed by NRMP where you will match. Also, by telling a program that, it is not going to influence them to rank you higher either. That has already been determined by your interview and credentials.
