A 33-year-old man comes to the office for counseling about recurrent deep venous thromboses. He is concerned because over the past few years he has had 4 recurrent lower extremity deep venous thromboses that have required treatment with oral warfarin. Each time he discontinues the warfarin, he suffers a recurrence. The patient works as an Internet web page developer and his job requires that he sit sedentary most of the day. During his last hospitalization, the hematologist told him that he has a condition known as factor V Leiden deficiency. The best next step is to
