step 3 experience - mepsych - ArchivalUser - 07-04-2007

I am a PGY-2 psych res(now PGY-3). I studied on and off for 1 to 2 months. I did only USMLE world and did 52%(time mode mostly, doing in tutor mode actually made me score less.I did USMLE world only once with no revisions. Hence, I think my score is representative of a 1st time effort). I used usmle world for ccs, and practised the same on the cd they sent me.
The test is toooooo loooong, the questions and answers are equally vague, and the only thing I cared about was it to end. I had loads of time left after each block(on an average, about 5 min). Though I marked questions, i never had the patience to return and do something about it. Most questions are about risk assessment for common issues like HTN,DM,etc. They are basically, advice which you give to patients. Hence, reading theory is not the best way of preparing. It helps if you were to read stuff regarding guidelines in family medicine for the various ailments. The 2nd day was better, since its shorter. I really cant comment on difficulty level, since I was surprised at my score everytime I did USMLE world too. Its just unpredictable. Do the best you can and hope for the best. I just hope I pass. This test if full of BS which I will mostly never use in my practice. This should be just for fam med and int med, since it helps them in their boards. I found out that the psych questions have options which are totally outdated. I think even the psych questions are put in by some quack. All the best
