5th. Since the nipple is 4th.

"Tube Thoracostomy"

-Tube is Inserted thru "5th Intercostal Space" slightly "Anterior to the Mid-axillary line'
(Lateral to the Nipple but Medial to the Latissimus Dorsi muscle)

-This is done when there is an "Ongoing Production" of air, fluid or pus in the pleural space.

Why did they choose 5th intercostal space and in that area in particular? I mean we still can insert the tube above rib 7 (midclavicular), above 9 (midaxillary) or above 11(paravertebral) safely, right?
Thanks sarim for the quesition!
