what is courtesy interview? - cheila9271978 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 what is couresy interview? is that where somebody helped you get interview? will the interview process be differnt? what's the chance of being accepted if one gets intrview thru contacts? tnx 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 ya ... the iv is sent as a courtsey to the person who recommended you... but i believe once an iv is sent, the result ll depend on ur perfomance. all the best. 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 Unfortunately, no one will be able to answer your question unless they are the PD of the program. Too many variables; some of which can be arbituary. 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 thank u 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 @cheila9271978 - just give it your best shot because you never know. i got an IV thru contacts from my observership at a uni program. i was expecting indifference at the IV but actually got a great treatment. Becauuse of my img status d other residents were curious to know about application process thu my perspective because not too many imgs get called there. Many of my fellow interviewees had applied to just about 20 programs and got many calls and so were very intruiged to know i had applied 150+ programs - ha ha. In the end i had a great interview - but my contact says not to have my hopes high because they rank mostly their students/others higher.... but this is the match and i'm putting them as #1 on my list...... you never know! Bottom line go for it with full confidence (but reasonable expectations).... THE INTERVIEW COUNTS..... whether courtesy or not! 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 I had a courtesy interview and I knew it already because my contact who got me the interview had already told me. The reason is because the PD already has made his mind of who he will be taking this year. It is a small program. One of them is the current Chief Resident's wife, the other is an attending's wife. Rest are candidates that have high scores but have committed to the PD due to family reasons and proximity to the program. My interview went great (probably because I knew I was under no pressure of losing anything) and the only reason I went to the interview was because I have only 2 other interviews and I want some practice before I went to them (where I may have a shot). I still know I will not be ranked and the PD hinted that already. *Most* courtesy interviews don't result in a match. It is only to appease the person you know so that program committee does not spoil its relationship with that person (probably an attending). After the interview, it is very easy to justify not matching a candidate. The only thing is whether you are sure it was a courtesy interview or not. 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 I got a courtesy inv as well. the guy that got it for me flat out told me that they write "courtesy" on the top of the application and they usually don't even rank you. that being said (wish he didn't tell me that) I am STILL going...i feel like i gotta take every chance i can get...hope this helps 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 thank you everyone for your response greatly appreciate it 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 fyi..97.87% matches happen because of contacts and its almost 100% sure that you would match if you got a courtsey interview!! getting a proper courtsey interview is however a bit complicated...make sure you have checked the box on your eras application which waives you from declaring courtsey ivs...only then will programs offer you one... 0 - ArchivalUser - 11-28-2011 On the contrary, the strength of your courtesy interview depends on the influence of the person getting them for you. A close relative of mine was able to get one for someone working with them, and the prog invited the person despite the person not having taking CK, even though prog policy states that you dont get IV before then. My relative knew who to contact (not just PD, but PC and all) and push to make sure that not only did they get the IV, but that the ranked the guy!. They ranked the guy and he ranked them #1 and he matched and just finished residency. Every prog is different, I wouldnt take any IV for granted, an IV is an IV, you go there and shine and you have a great chance of being ranked. Here is it basically, its the Program Coordinator (PC)/Secretary that has biggest influence on who gets an IV, but its the Program Director (PD), who has biggest influence on who gets ranked. |
