If your mentor has no problem with working you outside/offcampus then you can. You'll have to take permission from International office as well. I know it's possible. I have worked on J1research- paid and unpaid both.

I am on J1 research currently. Last month I asked my International Students' Office and they clearly told me: YOU CANNOT WORK OUTSIDE YOUR AREA OF RESEARCH.... NOT EVEN IN THE CAMPUS...
So working outside your lab will be illegal. You can confirm this from your ISO

I am not currently working. It was 2 years ago.
Who did sponsor your visa? was it your institution here or home country?

Thank everyone for your inputs !
@ golden11 : My visa is sponsored by institution in US. Did you do paid research in past or some other paid job ?
