nbme 16....please explain - ahmad12801 - ArchivalUser - 06-05-2015 An animal study is conducted to assess the effects of smoking on pulmonary defense and maintenance mechanisms. For 1 week, normal male rats are exposed to levels of cigarette smoke comparable to those encountered by humans who smoke cigarettes. Results of pulmonary testing are compared with baseline levels obtained the week before the smoke exposure. Which of the following sets of changes is most likely to be observed? Is everything low? smoking impairs mucocilliary clearance I know that much.. Mucus Production and Secretion up/down Alveolar Macrophage Function up/down Activity of Airway Cilia up/down 0 - ArchivalUser - 06-05-2015 i think 1-up 2-up 3-up i guess activity of airway cilia is down for chronic smoker.here it is only 1wk. 0 - ArchivalUser - 06-05-2015 i got it wrong 0 - ArchivalUser - 06-05-2015 Up , up , down . I said down because smoking irritate and destroy cilia 0 - ArchivalUser - 06-05-2015 Correction : down , up , down . I had doubt that 1 week wouldn't affect the cilia but it wouldn't increase neither . if the option was " normal cilia " I would have pick normal cilia but not increase. Please let me know you feedback 0 - ArchivalUser - 06-05-2015 Thanks for the question ahmad , after further reading I believe all are down. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2846725 |
