Haptens - are small molecules that can be bound to an antibody of T cell receptor. By itself a hapten can not elicit an immune response.

Haptens - are molecules that are not immunogenic but will bind to antibodies. When they are conjugated to a larger, more complex molecule (carrier) they will elicit an immune response. The definition for hapten is base on immunogenicity not necessarily size.

Voicing the same information....Immunogenicity increases with molecular size and complexity. Haptens are generally non-proteins or they are too small to be immunogenic unless they are covalently attached to a carrier protein molecule.
