there are numerous tests that might not be possible in short span of time.

It is best to check for nystagmus while asking patient to fixate on finger and then moving it in horizontal and vertical direction slowly over 1-3 sec in each direction approx one meter away from eye. Pateint should not move his/her neck but only eyes. This will suffice for checking nystagmus. In addition , do rombergs and ear examination. power and reflexes in limbs if central cause is suspected..

associated symptoms will also be helpful in deciphering the cause to be peripheral or central. In central u will have tingling, numbness or weakness of limbs or diplopia also or features of raised ICT.

Tests like dix hallpike maneuver and fatiguability of nystagmus or canal irrigation are not possible as few are time consuming and others we r not supposed to do.
