weight in kg x %burn surface area x 4 for adult
weight in kg x %burn surface area x 4-6 in babies

for example:
wt= 50 kg
BSA ( rule of 9's)= 40%

so total fluid to be given is 50 x 40 x 4 = 8000 ml of fluid

the fluid choice is Plain Lactated Ringers
50% of this fluid be given in 8 hours and the remaining 50% will be given in the next 16 hours.
so, 50% of 8000 is 4000ml. 4000ml will be given in 8 hours and the remaing 4000 will be divided into 16 hour..

hope this is what u want to clarify..

Rule of nines represents a general guidline of estimating the surface area of 2nd or 3rd degree burns.

Each leg 18% times two (four 9%)
Each arm 9%
Chest 18%
Back 18%
Head 9%
(perineum is only 1%)

In babies give two 9% to the head, and only three 9% to the legs.

As mentioned use RL, initially you can start with 20ml/kg/hr aiming for a urine output of 1-2ml/kg/hr.

Don't forget Tetanus prohylaxis, topical silver sulfadalazine creams or mephenide for deeper penetration, and triple antibiotics for burns near the eyes. Escharotomy for circumferential burns, leading to compartment syndrome, and immediate grafting for 3rd degree burns less than 20%BSA.
