HbC is a substitution of lysine for glutamate in the 6th position of beta globin chain
because the substituted amino acid is lysine which is not hydrophobic (unlike valine in HbS), the hemoglobin does not aggregate, and there is only a mild hemolytic anemia
it travels slower than HbS and HbA towards the cathode, because lysine is positively charged, wheras valine is uncharged, and glutamate is negatively charged
