Timing for Step 3 -

I want to start a clinical Fellowship ASAP but I am a bit lost in the exams. I have passed the Step 1 and Step 2 CK and have registered to sit the Step 2 CS in October. I noticed that a web site said that applications for Step 3 in 2004 closed in September 2004. Does that mean I wont be able to sit the Step 3 until 2005, and not start my Fellowship until after then? Please help a bewildered Australian

hey Aussie, you can apply for step 3 after sept 15th, the fsmb website will bring out a new application form. Just curious why you would want to do a fellowship in US since you are practicing in AUS ! How is the pay for doctors in Australia ?

I am here because my husband (also an Australian MD) is here doing research. The pay for residents is better in Australia, but as specialists it is very variable depending on whether you are doing public ot private, and what sort of practice you do.

Yes you can sit for step 3 this year because the fsmb new application cycle is from sept - sept. So, once the new application is updated on the website after sept 15th, you can apply through that ! Hope this helps. GL !

I think IMG is not correct. Closing in sept... means you need to send your application By August 30( they have to receive your appli by August30) to take the step3 from Sept 04 to Dec 04. If you don't send your application or not received by August 30, 04 you can not take the test in Second half of the this year. I hope it cleared your question. It happened to me and waited for 7 months to regester for the exam.

so does that mean that one can still make the sept 2004-sept 2005 bracket if one applies say sept 20th and get a schedule anytime in dec-feb?

Dear Comp,

You are wrong. I took and passed step 3 in November 2003. I applied in the last week of september 2003. You have to go to FSMB site and read carefully. In case you are applying for 2004, you have to send in the application before august 30th. Thats ok, but what about people who do NOT make it by august 30th ? For them and for the benefit of everyone, on september 15th, fsmb brings out a new application which can be used for the remainder of the year and the next year as well ! If you still do not believe me, then so be it as I have nothing more to add ! GL !
