to all of you,
you can't claim as education exp. because it's a lisincing exam , neither the books nor the travel,
fand you can not claim as a busniss expenses because it's an exam to get new job, hyou might lately claim you step3 test while you are in the residency,\

My tax rep put it as my edu expenses and I got 400$ back...

I got $2500 back. one of my colegues got 2900 back. Get a good acountant.

I claimed the fees for USMLEs, money speant on books, UW and kaplan q-banks as education expenses in 2006. My return was prepared by a tax consultant. Travel expenses for going to LA for the CS exams were not deductible. with form 1040 you can get all the deductions for education, books, clothes (as uniform), dry cleaning, stationary, traveling (only to work and not the travel for obtaining work) and a few more. I don't know if the exams for a license are not deductible and non-license exams are deductible and the tax consultant didn't mention that either.
