Does anyone know y do u take aspirin for the side effects of niacin (pruritis/flushing)? That is written in Kaplan's hyperlipidemia section in Pharm notes.

Because the pruritus and flushing is not mediated by histamine but araquidonic acid derivatives.

i guess asprin is antiinflamatory and and arachdonic acid metabolites is blocked i dont think the above answer is right

The pruritus caused by niacin is as a result of arachidonic acid derivatives and aspirin is an irreversible inhibitor of COX 1 and COX 2, so it blocks prostaglandin synthesis and consequently prevents the pruritus.
