Reduce BP - vacant_planets2000
#1
6. During a routine examination, a 32-year-old man
has a blood
pressure of 120/80 mm Hg. He is concerned because his
father, grandfather,
and two uncles have hypertension. He works as a
systems programmer for
a large computer company and frequently has to meet
tight deadlines.
He has smoked one pack of cigarettes daily for 10
years. He is 4.5 kg
(10 lb) overweight and drinks three cups of coffee
daily. Which of the
following measures is most likely to reduce this
patient's risk for
hypertension over the next 5 years?

A
) Increase intake of dietary fiber

B
) Restrict caffeine

C
) Stress management

D
) Weight loss

I went for D but solutions seem to prefer C

I think stress management makes sense... i fell for weight loss as well but i think they are asking over 5 years period and he is only OVERWEIGHT not OBESE and that too only 10lbs.. wont make much of a difference overall in 5 years... only thing that would go that long and get worse is stress management....

what ya think?

wt loss is one of the imp measures to reduce r/o HTN. BUT this man is only 4.5 kg overweight..not too bad i think.....and his BP is normal....age<40...
so probably, for this particular pt...stress management is the best way to prevent HTN...
the best answers should probably be to stop smoking...but it's not here....
so.........not sure
