hi i am in the same situation
This is what i am doing (although it is tough)
I am giving the exams again. Let tell you the computer based exam is easier than the paper based which i gave earlier (It could be biased as my knowledge base has improved)

I gave my step 1 and scored 97 (240) decent score to enter.

Regarding the attempts, it is at the descretion of the program director to consider. If you are in US you would have relized that everyone has different criteria for application. if your scores are good it should not matter.

one other thing is that you will have to justify your absence or the time gap of 7 + years

keep posting I too need some emotional support here
