Hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) therapy is indicated for close personal, sexual, or household contacts of a person infected with hepatitis B virus. HBIG is not indicated for individuals who have only casual contact with the infected patient (options A through D). The serum of an infected patient may contain greater than 109 viral copies per milliliter of blood, rendering it highly contagious. The increased risk in household contacts may be related to inadvertent exposure to contaminated blood through sharing of personal-care instruments, such as toothbrushes or razor blades. A dormitory roommate has a risk of acquiring hepatitis B that is similar to household contacts, and prophylaxis is recommended
