A 19-year-old man comes to the student health center, complaining of dysuria and a watery urethral discharge. He has had these symptoms for five days. He has no other medical problems. The patient remembers having sexual intercourse with a prostitute almost two weeks ago. He started smoking when he was 14, and has been smoking one pack of cigarettes daily ever since. He uses marijuana and "crack" almost daily, and drinks alcohol on weekends. He is unemployed and does not have any medications. Examination shows no abnormalities, except for a clear watery urethral discharge. A urethral swab is done and sent to the laboratory.
