Nonimmune thrombocytopenia, occurs mainly in young women; severe thrombocytopenia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (schistocytes present), neurologic abnormalities (often severe), renal failure (usually mild), and fever; secondary to endothelial damage of small vessels by unknown circulating factor in plasma --> widespread platelet thrombus formation (not a fibrin clot as in DIC) and thrombocytopenia (platelet consumption); prolonged bleeding time; obstruction of microvasculature by platelet thrombi damages RBCs (intravascular hemolysis) --> widespread organ injury

Nonimmune thrombocytopenia, occurs primarily in infants and young children; clinically similar to thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura except for milder neurologic abnormalities, more severe renal disease, and in some cases a history of exposure to a toxin produced by E. coli O157:H7 consumed in raw ground beef
