J1 Visa is Better than H1? - blitz
#21
Hey guys,

Yeh, I'm a dual citizen, Canadian and British. I've lived in Canada for over 20 years, and I go back in the summers...

So thats why I figure I can swing back to Canada for my 2 years after residency.

I e-mailed the College of Physicians and Surgeons Ontario, and they said they recognize USMLE Steps 1-3/American Board training, as alternatives to MCCQE1 and 2 and Canadian Board training, respectively.

I'm just a bit concerned now, about getting Statement of Need from Canada. Is this possible, even though I spend most of years in the UK studying medicine?

I assume it should be no problem, because:

1) I'm a Canadian citizen
2) My permanent address is in Ontario
3) My parents work in Ontario
4) All my bank info, Drivers License, SIN, etc. is Canadian/Ontario

Am I correct that I should have no problem getting a Statement of Need from Ontario?

H1 is better if you can get it but its soo hard to get H1 these days specially after the H1 quota has been reduced by the govt.

J1--easy to get in but if you come back to Canada, trust me there are many people in US working on J1 whom the United states would prefer to give them a job and H1 and GC rather than calling some one from Canada...My friend told me this..This is the harsh truth...I am a Canadian myself and I hate this...

And the thing with J1 is that you do waiver job in undeserved areas...and this is not the American dream we have..do we ??

And yeah as someone wrote after fellowhip, even getting a waiver is hard coz the underserved areas require a primary care doc and not some super specialist.

Serious eh?

Its hard to come back to America after the 2 year home rule?

Yeh, my 'dream' is to live in America. If thats the case, I might just do H1b then.

I'm now seriously considering dropping my other dream, which is gen surg. GSurg on H1b looks next to impossible. Especially categorical surgery.

Wish life could be simpler, ah well.

If you are British/Canadian citizen, go for J1. It's fine.I'm Indian citizen, but have been living in UK at the moment with PR status (known as ILR or Indefinite Leave to Remain in UK), expecting to become British citizen end of next year. Though NHS may not be providing the best of the working environments, I wouldn't mind coming back to good old British folks for 2 years! I love many things here. If I don't match this year, next year I'll be applying as a British citizen and I'll be happy with J1. My question to all you folks is, if I match/prematch this year with J1, then do I need to go back to India because I still have Indian passport or do I come back to UK for two years because I applied from UK as a permanent resident? Anybody knows?
