I need your help guys. I an IMG, preparing for step 1. I have graduated from my college in July 09. I have done clerkships in US for 2 months. I have 1 publications (1 international and hopefully i will get 1 in my country soon). I have cleared CS, I wasnt well and due to my stupidity gave step 1 with half prep and flunked. now I am working on a research project in my country.
I was very depressed and started reading again and now hoping to take my exa in march 1st week. I am getting a research offer from Harvard for an unpaid research fellowship FOR 1.5 YRS on a J1 visa status. I WANT TO ASK YOU GUYS.. what SHOULD I DO.???? SHOULD I ACCEPT THIS OFFER AND WORK FOR A STRONGER RESUME AND FILL THE GAP I HAVE CREATED DUE TO MY STEP 1 FAILURE OR STAY BACK REFUSE THIS OFFER AND TRY TO GET DOUBLE 99 AND THEN APPLY.

COS IF I ACCEPT THIS OFFER IT WILL BE DIFFICULT FOR ME TO BALANCE WORK AND STUDIES..??? pLS GUYS SUGGEST ME WHAT SHOULD i DO..??? PLS I REALLY NEED SOME HELP ? THANK AND GOD BLESS EVERYONE.

I would say TAKE the offer with both eyes closed. Coz it will not only help your CV, but also confidence- to be working. Ofcourse, downside is prep might be slower- but frankly even when all we do is prepare for an exam- things could still get slow. Also sitting in your home country, you might be under more pressure to do well which can sometimes backfire. Your family's viewpoints also need consideration though. Just my 2 cents here. GL!!

unpaid and 1.5 year? u can afford! u must be very rich man. if u can , money is no problem for u then i will take job and at the same time keep preparing.
u just graduated means no family, recent knowledge, so it should not be problem for u if u work 40 hours a week. many people work and prepare.
if u have child + work then it is going to slow your speed. it is upto u. just my 2 cents.

i think you should consider your options, find out somehow how many hrs you'll have to work, if its feasable then go for it, but don't hamper your studies either, you already have an attempt, and therefore try to score as high as possible. the research is also 1.5yrs and that too unpaid, what about housing and other living expenses?
you already have an international publication which is already very solid on your resume, all you have to do now is get a high score to land up somewhere.
