Most programs won't pay for your H1b visa as this poses an added expense to the program which most of the time have limited budget.

Years before, programs would be offering free air fare, hotel lodging, pre interview dinners to interviewees. Now, you'd be lucky if the residency program even gives a good lunch.

Programs who offer H1b visa would sponsor h1b visa under the understanding that the applicant would take care of all the paperwork, shoulder costs, lawyers fees etc... and all they need to do is sign at the bottom of the page.

You probably know already how hard it is to get a program to sponsor H1b visa. It's exxxtreeemmeelly harder to have a program pay for it. Program I graduated from stopped sponsoring h1's unless you already have one and they would just continue it because of the added workload to the coordinator.

Lesson is, be glad you have the H1. Don't push your luck by saying programs should pay for it. If they do offer, then you're extremely extremely lucky or a genius that they would move heaven and earth for you.

If you don't know about H1 processing, never done it before, don't know of anyone with experience who will do it for free.. i suggest go with who the program suggests who would likely have the experience in it. This is not the time to be taking risks and making errors on your visa application when you have already spent so much. What's another thousand dollars anyway to your bill.

Cheers!

By law of osmosis and diffusion, the most competitve specialty is the higher salaries and better life style, ie pediatrics then FM then psych.

applicantguide: most competitve specialty is the higher salaries and better life style

that is generally true, but peds has inpatients, just like IM. anytime there r inpatients, u r no longer 9-5 job. FM mostly have outpatients. hence better lifestyle.

for salary peds should be same level as IM, but for some reason all salary surveys show peds below FM. even I am not sure why.
