A 75 year old heavy smoker presents to the hospital with breathlessness, wheezing and a cough with yellow sputum. He has the following investigations : Hb 18 g/dl, WCC 12 x 10^9/l, ABGs show a pH of 7.38, pO2 of 8.5 kPa, pCO2 of 7 kPa.
