thiazides causes hypercalcemia .............and they r used for recurrent calcium stones .....wat is the mechanism ???

because it increases Ca reabsorption from the distal tubule .. so it decreases calcium concentration in the urine leading to decrease incidence of stones .. sodium is reabsorbed in the distal tubule by Na/Cl. Ca is reabsorbed by a channel depending on electrical gradient. Blocking Na/Cl increases negative charge inside the distal tubule cell and attracting Ca into the cell .. which leaves the cell by Ca ATPase and Ca/Na.

In one word thiazide will increase Na-Ca exchange in the DCT...
while thiazides cause hypercalcemia...Loop diuretics will cause hypocalcemia
