can i do gastric lavage in a patient with altered mental status? it seems there is a discrepancy in the book. can anyone please clearify it. thanks

no gastric lavage is contraindicated in altered mental sttus pts, bcz it causes aspiration.

its can be done if airway is protected in patients with altered mental status....reference kaplan videos

mtb2 says gastric emptying in always wrong with caustics and altered mental status. i have the feeling that this is a wrong information but correct me if i am wrong.
