with 81 in step1 and 76 in step2.electives done in US.Is giving step3 better or doing a research better in getting a residency?

well, it depends on your visa/INS status.. if you have GC/you are citizen, it is always better to do research rather than giving step-3. if you need visa (h-1) you have to pass step-3 before match deadline.
