I don't see a gastrectomy causing Iron Deficiency Anemia but I do see it causing Megaloblastic Anemia?

Hcl creates the acidic environment for absorption of iron.

shaluaashu is right...acidity from stomach helps keep iron as Fe2+ which binds oxygen more readily than Fe3+

and it does also cause megaloblastic anemia because if you remove stomach, you remove parietal cells (which secrete intrinsic factor, which is necessary for absorption of b12 at the terminal ileum), so no b12 = megaloblastic anemia

Celiac sprue can cause iron def anemia because iron is absorbed in the duodenum and celiac affects the proximal bowel.
