Cluster A illnesses ( paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal) are more common in the biological relatives of schizophrenics than among common in the biological relatives of schizophrenics than among control groups. Significantly more relatives with schizotypal personalilty disorder are found in the family histories of persons with schizophrenia than among control groups. There is less corelation between paranoid and schizoid personality disorders and schizophrenia.

Cluster B illnesses ( histrionic, narcissistic, antisocial, and borderline) demonstrate a genetic predisposition for antisocial personality disorder, which is also associated with alcoholism. Depression is more common in the family backgrounds of borderline persoanlity disorder patients. There is also a strong association between histrionic personality disorder and somatization disorder ( Briquet’s syndrome), in that patients with each disorder show an overlap of symptoms. Borderline personality disorder patients have more relativesl with mood disorders than do control groups, and borderline persoanlity disorder and mood disroder and mood disorder often coexist.

Cluster C disorder ( obsessive-compulsive, passive-aggressive, depndent, and avoidant) may also have a genetic base. Obsessive-compulsive trails are more common in monozygotic twins than in dizygotic twins, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder patients show some signs associated withdepression ( e.g. shortened rapid eye movement (REM) latency period, abnormal dexamethasone-suppression test (DST) result). The avoidant personality disorder patient often has a high anxiety level.
