Does anybody know if it is possible to start residency while having OPT status?
Is Step 3 required for this?
My understanding is that OPT is equivalent to h1b visa, but is only for 1 year. To start on H1B we need step 3- is it also mandatory for OPT?

Yes you can start on OPT - jst make sure the Program Director understands that .....
Wut you tell him is that you since you can start residency on OPT, it gives you more time than other candidates to complete Step 3 and then convert to H1 status once the paper work is done...

hi,
it is possible to start residency on opt only if the program in ready to accept you on the opt status. some programs come under the H1cap..so they cannot apply for H1 visa till october..in those cases opt is realy useful....some programs say that they dont accept candidates on opt...so everything depends on the PD.
