ethics question.. not NBME3 - sirolimus

this is indeed a very confusing Q.

On what grounds do we decide that patient is emancipated.
Q clearly states that she is in '15' 'high school' and 'lives with parents' and there is NO evidence of pregnancy!!

@mistakeproofdoc: sorry for the delay. I only saw your comment now.

@rosemaryusmle: Yes, it is kind of confusing. And also the patient does not require parental consent for this situation, even if she is not emancipated.

But I selected "A" because Kaplan clearly says that minors do not need parental consent for treatment in time of pregnancy; choice of contraceptives; or in treatment of STDs.

The main situation where there would be an argument here is if she was known to be pregnant and wanted an abortion. The law differs from state to state on abortion for minors, and for the sake of usmle, a physician should not provide that without parental consent, AND needs to encourage the patient to disclose her situation to her parents.

Sirolimus: Thank you for the Qs. You mentioned that one of them is from Khan's cases. So I'm assuming this one too is from the same source.

Thank you guys Smile
