well, it depends on program...

as far as I know, clinical rotations and electives differ for both of these specialities; so you have to take chance... at the same time, there are programs out there who just want completion of 1 yr residency as sole criterion to fill their open PGY2 position in internal medicine....

I got my certificate and score of final exam during may end last year, so was not able to be eligible for match. while searching for open position at findaresident, there were couple of programs having unfilled PGY2 in IM requiring 1 yr internship in ACGME accredited program.
