FM Externship in California - sheel
#1
Many FMGs are under the mistaken impression that an Externship is not possible in California because the Medical board of California prohibits externships. The medical board in fact, does not prohibit externships. What is prohibited is the practice of medicine by unlicensed persons. The medical board prohibits unlicensed person from even giving the impression that they might be practicing medicine.

At Dr Roger Washington's clinic, I learned a lot about the healthcare system in the US based on the outpatient clinic. This had been a very useful experience for me as I learned about the Health Insurances, managed-care, referral networks, prescription formularies, the forms for writing prescriptions, requesting x-rays, blood tests and consultation with specialists. I had a good hands on experience within the guidelines of the medical board of California. I triaged the patients, took histories and vital along with some physical examination. I also did some case presentations based on some related topics like Vitamin D deficiency and its effects, Hypertension and goals of its treatment. This was a really good experience towards learning the use of contemporary research towards treatment and management of the patients in an outpatient setting. What is unique and useful at this externship is that I learned effective ways to perform presentations- clinical case presentations, research topics and even present oneself professionally as one would be expected to do at an interview, for example at a medical residency program. I highly recommend that we have this exposure before we plan on applying to residency programs.

Offline, someone asked if I had the opportunity to examine patients during my externship in Dr Washington's office. I observed Dr Washington examine patients and during his examination, he directed me to examine patients with interesting findings with the patients' permission, of course. I was not allowed to examine patients myself. BTW. his office is in Santa Clara, California.

President of AMIQT, Dr. Peter Bernad http://www.neuro-doc.com/, is board certified in neurology and welcomes students to participate in month-long rotations and observerships with him and highly qualified colleagues. If students are interested in multiple specialties, we can accommodate them.

This is not an externship. This is an observership!!! Why must this doctor continue to attempt to confuse IMGs.

@sheel How long did you wait before you started rotating at Dr. W's office from the time you applied? And did you have to go 4x a week for 4 weeks at Dr. W's office? Thank you very much for your response.
