Anything missing w Addiction pathway? - goodman
#1
Also call "Rewarding Pathway". The basic addiction pathway in the brain is DOPAMINE PATHWAY.

REMEMBER:
SEROTONIN (ACCELERATOR)
DOPAMINE (BRAKES)

Activation of this pathway accounts for the "positive reinforcement".
Positive reinforcement of feeling makes us want to repeat the action that triggered that feeling
When activated by environmental stimuli, this pathway helps to make behavior adaptive and goal directed
Chemicals ingestion give the positive reinforcement without the linkage to environmental stimuli.
Chemicals ingestion can make behavior less and less environmentally responsive over time.
This addiction pathway is activated by all substances that produce psychological dependence.
A good example is Gambling. Gambling activates this pathway.
Serotonin (5(H-T) also plays a role in the addition process owing to its regulation of impulse control.

MEDIAL FOREBRAIN BUNDLE (MFB)--->NUCLEUS ACCUMBENS (NAC)--->VENTRAL TEGMENTAL AREA (VTA)

THERE ARE GOOD IMAGES SHOWING THE PATHWAY STUDY THEM
