Hello friends I am new in this forum. I need urgent help. I am on an H4B visa and want to start residency. I heard people with H4B need to change to H1B to start residency. But I know someone who finished his residency with H1B. I am sure of this fact. But I don't know how he did that and How to go about it for myself. I haven't done my Step 3 yet. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to do residency without taking H1B?

ask your residency coordinator, other residents who r in that program,a Lawyer.AS far as i know,to enter a residency, you must be a US citizen,a GC holder,a refugee or have a j1,HB1.I have not heard of any one on HB4.You cannot get the HB1 unless you have cleared the step3 and only only if your program is able to sponsor that kind of visa. Not every program is able to do so,just a few.
AGAIN,CONTACT YOUR RESIDENCY COORDINATOR IF YOU HAVE REALLY AN OFFER FOR THE RESIDENCY.

If somebody do residency with H4B.he has to have a Labor card.Maybe his wife(H1B) make the application of it and there green card is in the process. So he can do with H4B with a Labor card. That 's what i think.

Hi,
As far as I know H4B is given to the spouse of the H1B and with H4B you can not work. I know this because I am on H4B and this does not allow you to work. Residency is work.

Wildstar, Thats what i knew till i saw the other person. infact he finished his step 3 in his 3rd year. that means he didn't get H1B. And the University he is in doesn't give H1B. On top of it i know he didn't get J1 either becoz he just got his Permanent residency. and yes, does anyone know that with J2 you can work if you have an EAD. just wondering if there is any such thing with H4B as well.

Changed,
This is my 2 cents. With J2 you can work only if you are not the principle earner of the family and you have to obtain permission from Imigration department before doing so. But I have never heard anybody working with H4B so far. I have quite a few friends in software industry whos spouses are on H4B and not able work.

If he is on H4 but at the same time he is I-485 pending and has EAD then he can work wherever he wants. Based on your description, the person you know might be in this situation. That means his spouse is the principle applicant for the GC.
