Step 3, H1 and fellowships -

Please confirm the truth in this rumor:
that clearing step 3 and working on a h1 does not make a candidate more suitable for the fellowship match especially in a competitive field like gastro.

H1 visas are not the best for fellowships. Some programs will not interview H1 candidates. However I know several people on H1 who got interviews at NIH,EMORY,TULANE,UPENN for fellowships in Cardio/Gastro/Heme-Onc. So do not be discouraged. Find out what the fellowship visa requirements are before applying. What really makes the difference from my experience is what program you are coming from.
