I am a F1 PhD student and about to graduate, is it possible to use OPT to get into a residency program for a year (such as preliminary medicine)?

that's what i thought. But when i surved the website, i found (at least from Duke) that OPT may not be used unless the F1 visa is for MD degree in US. Does anybody have comments on that?
