Yes, I know someone working as a volunteer on B1, then got an offer of research fellow and he went back to his home country to switch the visa. Otherwise, he had to wait inside U.S. for a longer time.

I looked up research on B1 visa
Actually it is illegal to do research on a b1 visa if the research will benefit the university/institution.It has to be independent. People do it but it's illegal. Institutions use to overlook it but with 9/11 they are more cautious. An individual who will engage in independent research may be eligible for a B-1 visa or visa free travel under the Visa Waiver Program provided there is no remuneration from a U.S. source and the results of the research will not benefit the American institution. Those who will receive payment from a U.S. source and/or the U.S. institution will benefit from the results of the research, will require an exchange visitor (J-1) or temporary work (H-1) visa will be required. http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/niv/b1.html
