A 16-year-old girl tells her primary care physician that an ex-boyfriend has just told her that he tested HIV positive. The girl seems very anxious and asks to be tested for HIV. œWe were young, so I didn™t think that there was anything to worry about, she says. The girl also requests that her parents not be notified that she is having the HIV test, or of the results, whatever they might be. At this point, the physician™s next course of action should be which of the following?
A. Agree to give the HIV test, but only if the girl agrees to tell her parents if she tests positive
B. Agree to give the HIV test, but only if the girl will tell her parents about it
C. Ask the girl to sign a waiver stating that she does not wish to have her parents informed
D. Explain to the girl that the law requires that her parents be informed if she has an HIV test
E. Give the girl the HIV test and agree not to inform her parents
F. Refuse to give the HIV test unless the parents are notified

correct answer is E. In almost all states, children gain the rights of partial emancipation after their 15th birthday. Partial emancipation allows them to make medical decisions for themselves in four areas: sexually transmitted disease screening and treatment, substance abuse treatment, prenatal care, and birth control. In each case, no parental notification is required.
