optochin is used :
- to identify streptococcidae
- as staph. stain
- to differenciate between S. pyogen and S. pneumoniae
- to block S. viridans growth
- to differenciate between S. viridans and S. pneumoniae

Optochin (ethyl hydrocuprein hydrochloride) is the component of P disk. It is used for the presumptive identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is optochin sensitive, from Streptococcus viridans which is resistant. Bacteria that are optochin sensitive will not continue to grow (ie Streptococcus pneumoniae will die), while bacteria that are NOT optochin sensitive will be unaffected (ie Streptococcus viridans will survive).
