Prelim
is easier - generally this comes in Prelim-IM or Prelim-SURG. It's exactly as it sounds, a prelim year gives you basic foundation with a focus either on IM or SURG
Transitional
This is more reserved for AMG's. It may be substituted for Prelim year. In Trans, you rotate through every specialty as an intern. Ycan see why this maybe very popular AMG's, especially when they haven't taken Step3 yet...
Prelims are easier to get.

so how do you write prelim PS.
you just write that you want to get in and next yr you will look for pgy2 position in internal medicine
and when you are going through SOAP what exactly do you have to do in selecting prelim. do you have to apply for advance programs too right then( if that mandatory for applying to prelim)
