externship vs step 3 - dreamcometrue

hey i have scores in above 85 and cs 2 attempts,now step 3 failure,and 1 month observership in a private clinic that too last year,n on b1/b2 visa.
In my situation ,I THOUGHT USCE N RECO IS NEEDED,SO DO EXTERNSHIP FOR JULY N AUG,APPLY FOR PROGRAMS N THEN GIVE STEP 3 IN OCT.
pls tell me if its rt thing to do?as i am confuse if i give step 3 iby the end of aug instead of doin externship?

do usmle step3 first that should be your priority, cross the biggest hurdle first, chances of residency would increase with step3 than all those voluntary work experience, can show in the resume to fill in the gaps that u prepared for step3 if needed
