There are three stages of hypertension
Stage 1 140/90-99
Stage 2 160/100-109
Stage 3 180/110 or more

How are the treatments different

According to JNC 7,

Prehypertension= 120-129/80-84 & 130-139/85-89
Stage 1= 140-159/90-99
Stage 2= includes both 160-179/100-109 & >180/110


Treatment:

Stage 1 without any compelling factors= Thiazides for most, can also consider ACEI, BB,CCB or combination.

Stage 2 without any compelling factors= two drug combination for most (usually thiazides and ACEIs or ARBs or BB or CCBs).

Stage one always nonpharmalogical treatment like weight loss and regular excercise before you give drug treatment for up to twelve months

According to Harrison's and CMDT.....Normal and Prehypertension- No Hypertensive medications are required and only lifestyle modifications...

Stage 1 and Stage 2 = Lifestyle modifications + Medications....
