you add dextrose when blood sugar falls below 250 mg %.Before that you give NS only

DKA has severe dehydration and free water losses.

First, give NS plus insulin to expand intravenous space.
Then give 1/2NS plus insulin to replenish free water deficit.
When Glucose

when glucose less than 250, give D5-1/2NS to continue management until AG is normal.
